The best part of a vacation, aside from the actual vacation, is the planning. Sure there are some people who would rather not tackle the task so they rely on the aid of travel agents. But, by and large, most vacations are planned by someone in the family.

You don’t have to be a genius to plan a vacation, but it does pay to be organized and motivated to find the best attractions out there. The experience is actually a lot of fun for most people. To start planning a vacation, first determine where you want to go. Sit down as a family or group and pick a state or country that everyone wants to see. Try to stay as general as possible up front. It will keep you open to more possibilities than if the family is set on particular location.

The next step is one of the best. Start doing research. It does not have to be difficult or time consuming. Go online and find the local tourist associations where you want to go. Generally they will provide plenty of information online and will even send free travel guides directly to your home if requested. Flip through the information and see what catches your eye. Does your family want to spend their time on the beach, exploring trails, or shopping? Make a list of the attractions and be sure to tailor your picks to your family’s desires.

While it may seem like you are now done planning the vacation, you are only halfway there. A lot of travel guides will hype up attractions that are no longer operational, that are closed while you will be there, etc. So it pays to do a little quick research on your list of attractions. Simply google the places or use your favorite general travel site to find out more information. Be sure to note important information like price, hours of operation, location, etc.

With all that information, it should be easy to narrow down what attractions will fit your family’s schedule. Try to keep most of your attractions concentrated in one or two areas unless you are doing a roadtrip. From there, a centrally located hotel or hotels can be selected and transportation can be arranged.

Some may find it helpful to outline a basic itinerary listing the attractions they want to see and the order they should be seen in. Always try to list more attractions than the family can possibly see. That way, if something comes up and you have extra time or an attraction is closed, you have something else to do. Can’t come up with extra attractions? You can always get suggestions from locals when you get to the destination.

With little more than a couple of hours of work, an entire vacation can be planned that is tailor-made to suit your family.
